  • Hermanus is not only the holiday home of South Africa's rich and famous...

  • Hermanus is the home of the Abalone / Perlemoen industry in South Africa - farming these shellfish has been necessitated by the illegal poaching of thousands of tonnes per year.

  • Hoy's Koppie has an ancient cave & shell midden dating back to Hermanus' FIRST stone age residents.

  • The suburbs of Hermanus have their very own endangered plant species, endemic only to Hoy's Koppie and nowhere else in the world.

  • Hermanus was once the home of the true leader of "The Great Escape" (seen the movie?), Squadron Leader Roger Bushell - check for his name on the war memorial at the Old Harbour. "Chicken Run" was a spoof of the real movie.

  • The population of Hermanus quadruples every year during the week between Christmas and New Year.

  • The Magnetic Observatory is located in Hermanus, also a research station, it is the only one of its kind in South Africa. If you see the magnetic variation from true North on your map - this is where it is monitored and updated.

  • Hermanus is the only town in South Africa, and perhaps the world, with a railway station that has never had a track or trains running to it.

  • Our International Tourist Industry started in the 1800's as a treatment centre for wealthy Europeans with lung problems - mostly TB. The Windsor Hotel and the Hermanus Esplanade were formerly a TB Hospital.
